A trotro driver's daily money in 2026: what is published, a worked day, and what nobody publishes

Every driver knows the day's takings. Very few know the day's profit, because the money leaves in five directions. This page lists every line of a driver's day, gives the sourced figure where one exists, says plainly where none does, and then lets you fill in your own day.

Updated 8 October 2026. Sources read 8 Oct 2026: MyJoyOnline (NPA floors, 1 Oct), GRA (VIT table), MyJoyOnline (fares, 23 Sep), GOIL, Adom, YEN and Bolt as linked. Prices change every two weeks.

SalesEvery lineA worked dayYour dayFuelVIT stickerFines and leaksBoltNot publishedQuestions
Takings − sales − fuel − mate − dues = yours

Five subtractions. The owner fixes the first, the pump fixes the second, and the last three move every day. A driver who writes the five numbers each evening knows the day's real profit; one who does not is guessing at month end.

How the sales system works

A trotro driver does not earn a wage. The driver and mate run the car as a daily franchise: the owner demands a fixed daily fee, called sales, and the crew keeps what remains after sales and fuel. Owners do not contribute to fuel. Police, station and union dues, tolls and small repairs also come out of the crew's side (Humanities & Social Sciences Communications, 2020).

The sales figure does not move with the day or with the fare. When the GPRTU cut fares by 15% in May 2025, drivers protested that owners kept sales the same: one said "my car owner takes GH₵ 350 from me every day" (YEN, May 2025). Fares then rose 20% from 2 June 2026 (3News) and by a further 8% from 26 September 2026, when the GPRTU and GRTCC set trotro fares from GH₵ 5.50 to GH₵ 36.80 by route, citing fuel, spare parts and maintenance, and saying the government's diesel intervention had "materially moderated" the rise (MyJoyOnline, 23 Sep 2026). The fare moves; the sales figure is whatever you and the owner agreed.

A worked day

Example (made-up numbers, replace with yours). Prices of diesel and the sales figure come from the sources above; the takings, litres, mate pay and dues are invented to show the sum.

LineGH₵
Day's takings (made-up)1,600.00
Sales to the owner (the reported GH₵ 350; yours differs)−350.00
Fuel: 40 litres (made-up) at GOIL's GH₵ 18.46 diesel−738.40
Mate (inside the reported GH₵ 100 to 200 range)−150.00
Station, union, tolls, small repairs (made-up)−80.00
VIT sticker per working day (own arithmetic: GH₵ 20 a quarter ÷ 78 days)−0.26
Left for the driver, before tyres, servicing and repairs281.34

Two things the example shows. Fuel is by far the biggest line, so a rise of GH₵ 1 a litre on 40 litres moves the day by GH₵ 40, which is why writing the litres and the price at every fill matters. And the VIT sticker, the one cost with an official table, is the smallest line on the page: about GH₵ 0.26 a working day. The danger of the sticker is not its price but the police stop without one.

Your own day

Put in today's numbers. Nothing is sent anywhere; the sum is done on your phone. If you type litres and the price per litre, the fuel line fills itself.

Put the day's takings in first.

Say it instead: "Fuel 200. Car owner 350. Mate 150."

Ghana's pump prices change on the 1st and 16th. The National Petroleum Authority's price floors from 1 October 2026 are petrol GH₵ 16.45, diesel GH₵ 17.97 per litre and LPG GH₵ 11.10 per kg, up from GH₵ 16.00, GH₵ 16.77 and GH₵ 10.97. COMAC projected pump prices of about GH₵ 17.91 petrol and GH₵ 19.60 diesel, citing crude oil averaging US$124.20 a barrel and a weaker cedi (MyJoyOnline, 1 Oct 2026). A floor is not a pump price and a projection is not a price: GOIL's own page, when read on 8 October, still listed the 17 September pump prices of Super XP GH₵ 16.64 and Diesel XP GH₵ 18.46 (GOIL). Check your station.

Government's GH₵ 2 a litre diesel relief, shared between a GH₵ 1 cut in the D-Levy and GH₵ 1 from margins, was extended for two more months in an article of 1 October; that article's wording of the months is inconsistent, so confirm the end date before you budget on it (MyJoyOnline, 1 Oct 2026). The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors' chief executive said a Madina to Circle trotro buys about 25 litres for a journey, and that a flat GH₵ 2 favours large-tank private vehicles over trotros (Daily Graphic, 17 Sep 2026). Whatever your route, write the litres and the cedis at every fill.

The VIT sticker, per working day

Vehicle Income Tax is a fixed amount by vehicle class, paid by sticker each quarter on or before 15 January, 15 April, 15 July and 15 October. From GRA's table (GRA, read 8 Oct 2026):

ClassPer quarter GH₵Per year GH₵Per working day, own arithmetic (6 days x 13 weeks = 78 days a quarter)
A2 Taxi12480.15
A4 Trotro up to 15 persons16640.21
B3 Trotro up to 19 persons20800.26
B4 Trotro 20 to 23 persons22880.28
B5 Trotro 24 to 32 persons301200.38

GRA says VIT monitoring is done with the Ghana Police Service. Keep the receipt; the full class list, the payment code and the Bolt, Uber and Yango classes are on the VIT sticker guide. How VIT sits with your other tax: how to pay tax as a small business, and for sales of a driver who owns the car, the GRA Modified Taxation Scheme.

Fines, police and the leaks you can close

  1. Police and fines. The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana said on 18 August 2026 that "commercial drivers are now spending almost half of our revenue on police extortion" (Adom, 18 Aug 2026). That is an association's claim, not an audited figure. From 1 October 2026 camera fines arrive by SMS and are paid on Ghana.gov within 14 days, or contested online in the same window (Daily Graphic, 15 Sep 2026). Write every payment the day it happens, with the place; whether the number is half or a tenth, only your record can say.
  2. Takings that never reach the count. Say "Trip Madina Circle 90" as each trip ends, and the count does not depend on anyone's memory.
  3. Chop money mixed with car money. Keep it on its own line ("chop money 30") so the car's profit stays true.
  4. Repairs paid from memory. Tyres, oil and servicing are paid from the day's money weeks later. If they are not written, the month looks better than it was.

Bolt: the same sum with a commission

Bolt publishes 20% of the final price per order in Ghana, calculated automatically and deducted from the weekly earnings, applying to cash and card rides and cancellation fees (Bolt support, read 8 Oct 2026). The one worked day found: GH₵ 1,000 in, GH₵ 200 fuel, GH₵ 250 commission, GH₵ 550 left before servicing, oil, tyres and insurance, from a driver working about 12 hours (YEN, 12 Feb 2026). For a work-and-pay car, replace "sales" in the calculator with your weekly payment divided by the days you work.

What is not published

An empty cell on this page means the number is not public, not that it is zero. The way to fill it is your own record, kept for three months.

The 30-second record

Nobody writes in a moving car. Say it, at the station or at the end of a trip, and see the 4-column evening count and the printable sheet if you prefer paper. If a passenger or a colleague owes you, the customer book keeps it.

Questions people ask

How much do trotro drivers make a day in Ghana?

No source publishes a typical figure, and anyone who gives one is guessing. What is published are pieces: one driver saying his owner takes GH₵ 350 a day in sales (YEN, May 2025) and a mate saying GH₵ 100 on a bad day to about GH₵ 200 on a good one (YEN, May 2024). The driver's share is the takings minus sales, fuel, mate and dues, and only your written days can say what that is.

How much sales do trotro drivers make?

"Sales" is the fixed daily amount the driver pays the owner, not what the driver makes. The one published figure is GH₵ 350 a day for one Accra trotro (YEN, May 2025). It is agreed between each driver and owner, so there is no standard rate.

How much is trotro in Ghana?

From 26 September 2026 the approved intra-city trotro fares run from GH₵ 5.50 to GH₵ 36.80 depending on the route, after an 8% rise announced by the GPRTU and the GRTCC (MyJoyOnline, 23 Sep 2026). Your own fare is on the approved list for your route.

How much is fuel in Ghana per litre?

The NPA price floors from 1 October 2026 are GH₵ 16.45 per litre of petrol and GH₵ 17.97 of diesel, and pump prices are higher: COMAC projected about GH₵ 17.91 and GH₵ 19.60. GOIL's own page, when read on 8 October, still showed Super XP GH₵ 16.64 and Diesel XP GH₵ 18.46 from 17 September. Prices change on the 1st and 16th.

How much is the vehicle income tax (VIT) for a trotro in Ghana?

GRA's table lists GH₵ 16 a quarter (GH₵ 64 a year) for a trotro up to 15 persons, GH₵ 20 (GH₵ 80) up to 19, GH₵ 22 (GH₵ 88) for 20 to 23, and GH₵ 30 (GH₵ 120) for 24 to 32 persons. The quarterly dates are 15 January, 15 April, 15 July and 15 October.

How to pay vehicle income tax in Ghana?

Buy the quarter's sticker at any GRA Domestic Tax Revenue Office and paste it on the front windscreen. GRA's page also shows the short code *222# and payment through Ghana.gov, but does not publish the menu steps, so follow the prompts. Our VIT guide has the full class table.

How much does a Bolt driver make a day in Ghana?

One driver told a financial planner in February 2026 that he takes GH₵ 1,000 a day, pays GH₵ 200 for fuel and GH₵ 250 in commission and keeps GH₵ 550 before servicing, oil, tyres and insurance (YEN, 12 Feb 2026). He works about 12 hours a day. It is one driver, not an average. Bolt publishes a 20% commission on the final price.

How much is road worthy in Ghana in 2026?

We could not find a 2026 roadworthy fee for trotros published by the DVLA, so none is given. Ask the DVLA office, and write what you paid as a yearly cost. The Concerned Drivers Association complained in August 2026 that late renewal fees double and triple, without giving amounts.
