Ghana had 491,057 active mobile money agents in 2025, a fifth more than the year before. Almost every one of them has the same three questions: what is the commission really, why does the e-cash or the cash always run out at the wrong time, and how do I know at night that nothing went missing. This page answers all three from published sources and shows a 30-second count that fits between customers.
Written 18 September 2026, corrected and calculator added 8 October 2026, from MTN's help centre, the Bank of Ghana's agent guidelines and the Bank's 2025 oversight report. Commissions change; check your own statement. Free, no signup.
That one line is the whole agent business. Commission arrives monthly from MTN; what you can check today is that the e-cash on the agent SIM plus the physical cash equals what you started with plus commission earned. If it does not, something happened today, and you will find it tonight, not at month end.
Check tonight: does your e-cash + cash balance?
There are two different amounts on every cash-out, and the web mixes them up. The customer fee is what the customer pays and MTN publishes it. The agent's share is what the agent keeps, and MTN does not publish it in a table we could read.
| Cash-out amount | Customer pays (MTN, since March 2024) | Agent share as reported |
|---|---|---|
| Under GH₵ 50 | GH₵ 0.50 | GH₵ 0.20 |
| GH₵ 50 up to GH₵ 2,000 | 1% | 0.4% |
| GH₵ 2,000 and above | GH₵ 20 flat | GH₵ 8 flat |
The customer column is confirmed. MTN's help centre gives 1% and GH₵ 20 flat (MTN, cash-out fees, read 8 Oct 2026), and 3News and Asetena Pa agree (3News, February 2024; Asetena Pa).
The agent column is reported, not published by MTN. MTN's help-centre article headed "What are the new agent commissions for cash-out transactions?" has the same text as the customer-fee article, so it describes the customer's fee, and an earlier version of this page wrongly showed it as the agent's share. The 0.4% and GH₵ 8 come from YEN (29 February 2024), which cites mobile money vendors' union documents, and Asetena Pa, which gives GH₵ 0.20 under GH₵ 50. The same YEN report quotes the president of the Mobile Money Association of Ghana: on a GH₵ 15,000 cash-out the customer is charged GH₵ 20 and the agent earns GH₵ 8, with the telcos taking GH₵ 12. Those sources are not independent of each other, so treat the agent column as a good estimate and check it against your own statement. There is also a separate cash-in commission paid monthly; no source we found gives its rate. Telecel Cash and AT Money have not published tables.
Type a cash-out amount and how many you do. It shows what the customer pays and the agent share as reported. If your statement shows a different commission, type it in the last box and it replaces the reported one. Nothing leaves your phone, and it works offline once the page has loaded.
Type an amount of GH₵ 1 or more.
Cash-in commission is not included because no rate is published. This is an estimate for planning, not MTN's statement. Customer fee figures: MoMo cash-out charges calculator.
| Transaction | Customer charge |
|---|---|
| Cash-in | Free |
| Cash-out, GH₵ 50 and below | GH₵ 0.50 |
| Cash-out, GH₵ 50 to GH₵ 2,000 | 1% |
| Cash-out, above GH₵ 2,000 | GH₵ 20 flat |
Sources: MTN help centre on cash-out fees and cash-in; 3News, February 2024 on the March 2024 change. Older pages still say "1% capped at GH₵ 10"; that was the tariff before March 2024. The Bank of Ghana's agent guidelines say an agent may not charge anything beyond the principal's published fees, must display the charges at the point, and must not transact when no receipt or notification can be issued (Bank of Ghana agent guidelines, sections 9, 21 and 22).
People still search "e levy is back". It is not. Parliament repealed the Electronic Transfer Levy on 26 March 2025 and the President assented on 2 April 2025 (Ghana Revenue Authority; Presidency). If a customer asks why the charge is what it is, the answer is the table above and nothing else.
Agents call it float: the e-cash on the agent SIM plus the physical cash in the box. Every transaction must run against a pre-funded agent account, so no e-cash means no cash-in, and no cash means no cash-out. The problem is old and well described: it comes from too little working capital and from not being able to predict how much cash and e-cash the day will need; the remedy named in the same analysis is recording transactions so the pattern shows (Graphic Online, September 2022). Guides for new agents still list float shortage as the main struggle (Fido, April 2026).
The pattern is yours to see, if the days are written: which days cash-out runs ahead (salary week, market day, month end) and which days cash-in does. Two weeks of records tell you how much cash to carry on a Friday. No record, and every Friday is a surprise.
Between customers, say it. At night, ask it.
| You say | CountMy writes |
|---|---|
| "Commission 5" | Earned, commission, GH₵ 5 |
| "Airtime 10" | Sale, airtime, GH₵ 10 |
| "Rent 30" | Cost, rent, GH₵ 30 |
| "Transport 15" | Cost, transport, GH₵ 15 |
| "Kojo dey owe me 100" | Kojo owes you GH₵ 100 |
| "How much today?" | It answers out loud |
A cash-out is not a sale: GH₵ 500 leaves the box and GH₵ 500 of e-cash arrives on the SIM. So CountMy keeps what is actually yours, the commission, the airtime and the costs, and who owes you. The e-cash and cash count stays where it belongs: at closing, count the cash, read the e-cash balance on the SIM, add them, and compare with the morning total plus today's commission. The MoMo agent nightly check does that sum for you and keeps the last 7 days on your phone. Your record of commission is the third number that settles any difference. It works in English, Twi and Pidgin, on an ordinary Android in Chrome, and the month can be sent to your own WhatsApp.
Say it: "Commission 5"Free. No password, no MoMo PIN, no Ghana Card. It never touches your agent SIM.
Fraud reports in Ghana rose 48% in 2025 to 24,778 cases, and mobile money and other digital platforms were more than 97% of them (Bank of Ghana fraud report, via Pulse, July 2026). Three patterns hit agents directly:
A written record does not stop a scam. It does show, within the hour, that GH₵ 500 left the box and nothing arrived on the SIM, which is when it can still be reported.
The customer pays 1% from GH₵ 50 to GH₵ 2,000 and GH₵ 20 flat above (MTN). The agent share is reported as 0.4% and GH₵ 8 flat (YEN, Asetena Pa), not published by MTN. Check your own monthly statement against your own count.
Monthly, from MTN, as two commissions: one for cash-out and one for cash-in.
No. Repealed 2 April 2025.
GH₵ 0.50 up to GH₵ 50, 1% from GH₵ 50 to GH₵ 2,000, GH₵ 20 flat above. Cash-in is free.
Guides for new agents quote GH₵ 3,000 to GH₵ 20,000 of starting cash and e-cash; registration itself is free. Those are guide estimates, not MTN figures.
No. It only keeps the record you say to it. It never asks for a PIN, a SIM or a password.
