I, the borrower, received GH₵ ____________ (in words: ______________________________) from the lender on ______________, as a loan, by cash / MoMo (reference ______________).
I will repay it as follows: ___________________________________________________. Extra charge or interest: ______________ (write none if none).
This is a written record that one person lent money to another: how much, when, how it will be paid back, and who saw it. It helps two people who trust each other remember the same thing.
It is not a lawyer's loan agreement and we make no claim about what a court in Ghana would do with it. We cite no law here because we did not verify any. For a large amount, a business loan, or anything with interest or security, ask a lawyer to draw up the agreement.
Write the MoMo reference if the money went by MoMo: the message on both phones is the best proof that the money moved.
Each payment back goes in the table, with the lender's initials. When the balance is zero, write "paid in full" and the date across the top, and give the borrower a copy.
Ask for a witness if the amount matters. Keep a photo of the signed page on your phone.
Questions people ask
What is an IOU?
A short written note saying "I owe you" a certain amount, signed by the person who owes. The sheet above adds the date, how it will be repaid and a table for payments back.
Is there a free IOU template?
Yes, this one: a filled example and a blank A4 sheet. Print it, or save it as PDF from your phone.
How do I write a loan agreement form in Ghana?
For a small loan between people who trust each other, write who lent to whom, how much, when, how it will be repaid and whether there is any charge, then both sign and ask a witness to sign. For larger or business loans, ask a lawyer: this sheet is a record, not a legal agreement.
How do I ask someone to pay back money I lent?
Ask privately, ask for a date, and show the record kindly. There are ten copy-ready messages on the page for asking a friend or family member.
Should I charge interest on a loan to a friend?
That is for the two of you to agree. Whatever you agree, write it on the sheet, even if it is "none".
