How to ask a friend or family member to pay back your money: 10 messages that keep the relationship

Asking someone you love for your money is harder than asking a customer. These ten messages are warm, honest and short. They ask for a date instead of making an accusation.

1. Light and friendly

First time you ask

Hi [name], hope you are well. Quick one: do you remember the [amount] for [what it is for]? When do you think you can send it? No stress, I just want to plan.

2. Honest about why

Hi [name]. I do not like asking, but I need the [amount] for [what it is for] back because I have a bill coming. Can you tell me when you can send it?

3. Asking for a part

Hi [name]. If you cannot send all [amount] now, send what you can and the rest later. Even half would help me. What do you think?

4. After they dodge

Hi [name]. I want to keep us good, so I will ask plainly: what day can I expect the [amount] for [what it is for]? A date, even a far one, helps me more than "soon".

Hi [name]. About the [amount] for [what it is for]: I know family helps family, and I would like us to settle it so it does not become a thing. Can you send it by [date]?
