"Susu app" means two different things. One kind holds the contributions for you. The other only keeps the record and never touches the money. Which one you want decides how much you must trust the company.

| Kind | What it does | Holds the money? |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms for collectors and groups | Group susu cycles, goal savings and digital passbooks for collectors, cooperatives and welfare funds. Example: SusuPaa, a B2B platform in Accra (MyJoyOnline, 11 Sep 2026). | Not stated in what we read |
| USSD savings groups | Join or create a group on the phone, deposit from the MoMo wallet, locked for the cycle the group sets, and payouts go to each member's own MoMo number. Example: SusuLink, *919*4006# (Moolre startup leaderboard). | Yes, through the provider's wallet |
| A record book (a notebook or CountMy) | Writes who paid, how much and the running total. Does not hold, move or lend the money. | No |
We could not read the owners' own sites today, so the descriptions above come from press reports and a startup leaderboard, and we found no price, identity-check or licence details for these products. Ask any of them for its licence before you give it your money. We say nothing about their quality; this is a map, not a ranking.
On 6 October 2026 the Bank of Ghana named 20 loan apps operating without a licence, and one of the 20 is called "Susu Loan" (Citi Newsroom, read 8 Oct 2026). The Bank told the public not to deal with them. In July 2026 the SEC warned against suspected fraudulent investment schemes and advised checking a platform's licence status and being wary of guaranteed or unusually high returns (Citi Newsroom, July 2026). A susu has no interest and no profit by design (Nonprofit Quarterly, 2024): an app that promises you returns is not a susu.
Write the rules down first: amount, day, order of payout and what happens when someone misses. A copy-ready rules template is on this site. If your group collects money from people outside your circle, the rules change: read what the Bank of Ghana says about susu collectors.
Say "Ama paid 10" and your record is keptFree notebook for your money. No password, no MoMo PIN, no Ghana Card.
We do not rank products. If you want an app to hold contributions, ask for its licence and read what it says about where the money sits. If you only want to know who paid and how much, a record book or a notebook app that never touches the money is enough and costs nothing.
We did not find a current published list. Susu enterprises are regulated by the Bank of Ghana, and the Ghana Co-operative Susu Collectors Association is the umbrella body. Ask the Bank or the Association whether a given collector is licensed.
A fixed amount is collected regularly from each member and paid out to one member at a time on a set schedule. There is no interest, and enforcement is mostly trust and reputation (Nonprofit Quarterly, 2024). A collector who keeps the money for members is a different arrangement, described on the licensing page.
We have not verified what MTN or other networks offer under a susu name, so we do not describe it here. Ask the network, and check any product against the licence warning above.
Safety depends on who holds the money. Check the licence, be wary of guaranteed returns, and prefer a record you keep yourself when nobody needs to hold the money.
